From your first call to your final walkthrough — here's exactly what working with By The Brick looks like. No surprises, no shortcuts, no guesswork.
Most contractors show up, quote fast, and disappear. We do it differently. Every project follows the same proven 10-step process — because consistency is how you get results that last 20+ years in Colorado's climate.
Colorado's freeze-thaw cycles are brutal on hardscaping. Cutting corners at any step means sunken pavers, leaning walls, and repair bills. Our process is built to prevent that.
We start by listening. Tell us what you're envisioning — the space, style, and how you want to use it. We'll ask the right questions to understand your goals, timeline, and budget before we ever visit your property.
A senior installer walks your property — evaluating drainage, grades, access points, and existing conditions. This is where we spot issues that affect pricing and longevity that other contractors miss. No charge, ever.
You'll have a detailed written estimate in your inbox within 24 hours of our site visit. Everything is itemized: labor, materials, base prep, and special conditions. You know exactly what you're paying for — no surprises.
We walk you through material options from our supplier partners — CPS Distributors, SiteOne, Belgard, Basalite, and Keystone. Colors, patterns, borders, and layouts are all discussed until you're happy with the plan.
Before anything is scheduled, you receive a clear written contract — scope, timeline, total price, payment terms, and your 2-year workmanship warranty in plain language. No verbal agreements, no surprises mid-project.
We dig to the correct depth for your project and soil type — typically 8–12" for a patio base. Proper excavation depth is the single biggest factor in whether pavers stay level through Colorado freeze-thaw cycles.
4–6 inches of crushed concrete base is installed and compacted with a gas-powered plate compactor in lifts. This is what separates a 20-year patio from one that sinks in two winters. We never substitute gravel or compacted dirt.
A quarter inch of fine mason sand is screeded perfectly level as the bedding layer. Pavers are laid to pattern and cut with precision on a diamond blade saw. Borders, inlays, and pattern transitions are all executed with care.
All paver edges are encased in concrete to lock the installation permanently. Polymeric sand is swept into the joints and activated with water — hardening to resist weeds, ants, and joint washout for years to come.
We walk the completed project with you before considering the job done. Any concerns are addressed on the spot. You receive your written warranty docs, care instructions, and our direct contact. Done means done right.
The surface is what you see. The base is what makes it last. Here's exactly what goes under every By The Brick installation — top to bottom. Skipping or cheapening any layer is where most contractors cut costs. We don't.
